We Have a Charger Power Bulge Hood That Comes With the Car
This is a very rare opportunity to purchase a real documented vintage Grand National chassis. So many of the cars out there are fakes or have very shady histories, but this this one you have none of those worries. This is the 1972-1973 season K&K Insurance Dodge Charger that was one of the main Dodge teams and was crewed by the famous Harry Hyde. The K&K Insurance team won the NASCAR championship in 1970 and had continuted good success in 1972 and 1973. The car was driven by famous drivers Bobby Issac and Buddy Baker with the awesome 426 Hemi under the hood. Not many real 426 Hemi NASCAR chassis' have survived the wars and restored famous examples are bringing well over $100k restored.
We want to get this out of the way before we get too deep into this, the car is rough. The old says goes "nothing is more useless than an old race car" and this one is a great example of that. It sat in a swamp in Ohio for a number of years on the ground and has a lot of frame rust. The cage is pretty much intact but you will need a donor car frame rails to put it back together. A body is poorly tack welded on it now but it was more just to get the metal out of the way rather than put it together. It does come with a correct bulge hood that are getting very hard to find.
This car was built in the winter of 71/72 and raced with the K&K team in the 72 and 73 race seasons. Norm Krauskop, owner of K&K Insurance, boycotted most of the 1974 season because of the new NASCAR rules against the Mopar big blocks so the K&K team sold off a bunch of cars in the winter of 73/74. This car was sold to a team in Kentucky and raced in the 1974 Daytona ARCA race and won using the K&K team as a pit crew. The car looked exactly like a K&K team car except it said Buddy Ward's Garage on the 1/4 panel rather than K&K Insurance. We have found an article in the Daytona newspaper from before the race quoting Harry Hyde saying they sold the car for $20k! That was a lot of money in 1974.
As far as proving what the car is this one has a lot of tell-tells. First off the front K-Member has the initials "TP" welded into it. When this car was being built Buddy Parrott was a crew member on the K&K team. We have a letter saying his son, Todd Parrott, who is a current NASCAR crew chief, was messing around the shop one day and welded his initials into the K-Member. You can also see in the "as-found" pictures that the car still had a lot of it's original sheet metal even though it was beat pretty hard. You can see the high fuel filler on the car that was a signature K&K trait because they had a fuel filler who was very tall and this allowed them to get just a little more gas in the car. You can also see in those pictures the "Poppy Red" paint of the K&K team all over the place.
We don't want to bore everybody with a complete ownership history here so if you want more details on the history of the car please contact us. This car has been all over the country from the Carolina's to Kentucky to Ohio to Arizona to California and then to Olympia, Washington.
The car is pretty much a stripped rolling chassis but it comes with a full floater 8 3/4 rear end a previous owner put in, the original dash the car came with when it was found, one original H&M wheel dated 2-68, and the original front hubs. The rear end does not come with a pumpkin but the car has nice roller modern Aero wheels with slicks.
Please e-mail or call us (360-705-0943) to set up an appointment to see the car or if you have any questions. The car is at Rocket Restorations located in Olympia, Washington, which is about an hour south of Seattle, Washington. This is Rocket Restoration owner Tom Hergert's personal car and is selling it to fund the building of a 1965 Plymouth was raced at Riverside in 1970, 71 and 72 in the Permatex races.
